The September 22nd prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, involves selecting a word, then using it as the title and/or first word of each line of the poem, making it at least ten lines long, if possible. Continue reading

I don’t get it (a poem)
Though I made a conscious decision several months ago to stop following the news (especially television news), obviously I still hear about things.
A few weeks ago, I resolved to write something about my utter confusion and disbelief when it comes to the many ways we as human beings mistreat…well…just about everything, especially where violence is involved. I’ve been finding that it’s not such an easy task—in fact, it’s all too easy to come off as pedantic, patronizing, and/or holier than thou. I’ve also found that there’s just so much that could be addressed that things could become very unwieldy very quickly. So, these are just a small few of the questions that sometimes go through my head…

My lifeline to you (a poem)
The September 20th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to write a short poem about a favorite item, using Donald Hall’s ‘The Things’ as inspiration. I chose to approach the subject a different way, focusing on the catalog of emotions that is my ever-changing music collection. Continue reading
Spam poetry
There was a period many years back when I would get spam consisting entirely of random words. Some of the spam I get with this blog reminds me of that, despite the apparent attempt to construct something resembling coherent sentences. The following comes from two spam comments; except for breaking up the lines, the text is exactly as I received it. Continue reading
I had a dream (a poem)
This poem was part of my 365 Project back in 2009–2010. I don’t seem to have written it down or saved it anywhere else, so it wasn’t until a week or so ago, when I was looking for stuff to upload to CafePress as possible t-shirt or mug designs that I re-discovered it… Continue reading
Somewhere faraway (a poem)
Yesterday morning, I arrived early for an appointment. For my in-car listening that morning, I had chosen a mixtape I made in 1987 (the CD player in my car stopped working back in February). One of the songs on the tape, included as an instrumental interlude, was ‘Somewhere Faraway’, from Melon’s 1987 album Deep Cut. (Club-goers may remember Melon from dance track ‘Hardcore Hawaiian’.) Seeing that title on the j-card started me thinking, and I began to write…

27 November 2009
Happened upon this today while going through a personal project from a few years ago. If I’m recalling correctly, it’s from a day when I was driving a few blocks from home while listening to Ruby Throat. It had rained the day before, but this particular day was sunny (or perhaps cloudy yet warm). As sometimes happened in that particular neighborhood, the heat from the sunlight caused steam to rise from the wet pavement. Continue reading
A snapshot (a poem)
The September 4th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to ‘[w]rite a series of short poems that each present a snapshot description of a larger subject.’ I didn’t get as far as doing a series, but I think I got the snapshot aspect right. Empty vases on the window sill (a poem)
Today’s poem was inspired not by a prompt, but by a line in a new poem posted today by Talicha J, Something has tried to kill me and failed… My poem is not as evocative, nor is it a response to Talicha J’s poem; it’s an impression based on a photograph I made yesterday. Either way, the line in question, “I gave him hours he didn’t deserve”, had me rushing to pen and paper…
