Yesterday morning, I arrived early for an appointment. For my in-car listening that morning, I had chosen a mixtape I made in 1987 (the CD player in my car stopped working back in February). One of the songs on the tape, included as an instrumental interlude, was ‘Somewhere Faraway’, from Melon’s 1987 album Deep Cut. (Club-goers may remember Melon from dance track ‘Hardcore Hawaiian’.) Seeing that title on the j-card started me thinking, and I began to write…

A snapshot (a poem)
The September 4th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to ‘[w]rite a series of short poems that each present a snapshot description of a larger subject.’ I didn’t get as far as doing a series, but I think I got the snapshot aspect right. A dreamland encounter with Hope (a poem)
Scenes from last night’s dreams…
If the ground doesn’t shake for too long (a poem)
It’s completely a coincidence that I wrote this last night. The first line popped into my head as I was watching the BBC’s Kate Bush documentary. The parenthetical line sums up part of my experience living in Tokyo—if more than a couple of months had passed since the last noticeable earthquake, I’d start to get a little nervous, figuring that the regular small earthquakes helped release energy that might otherwise build up to later produce a much stronger earthquake.
Saturday in dreamland (a poem)
No prompt today, just a word that popped into my head…
Green (a poem)
The August 22nd prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to choose a color, then write a poem using only images of that color. I didn’t quite do it that way, but it worked for me.
Dreaming? (a poem)
The August 20th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to write a poem of seven-syllable lines about a dream. I’ve been going through a stretch where I’ve been having dreams, but don’t remember them very well (if at all) when I awake, so…
That laugh she had (a poem)
The August 19th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to write linked haiku, with the last line of the first verse becoming the first line of the second, and so on. It also suggested writing about a favorite flower, tree, or vine, but I chose to ignore that. I did, however, start this one with the last line of the haiku I posted the other day…
A summer haiku
I recently found that Hulu has a few current Japanese dramas available for streaming. While watching one last night, during a scene in which two of the main characters are listening to the sounds of cicadas in a park, I came up with a haiku.
The first day of something new (a poem)
The August 15th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, commemorates the opening of the Woodstock Festival on this day back in 1969. It suggests listening to the music of any of the performers appearing that weekend, then writing a poem based on one or more of their songs. ‘If you are unable to listen to their music today, write a poem about a concert you’ve attended.’ The poem I wrote is based on my experience attending three of the concerts on David Sylvian & Robert Fripp’s March 1992 Japanese tour.
