Today I worked on preliminary layout stuff for the first section of my new book of poems. Here’s a screenshot of the first page:

This Is Fifty-Three, day 14
More scanning (and, occasionally, re-scanning) yesterday. I made it through all the SX-70 and 600 photos—and much faster than I had expected; with the number of re-scans needed to get rid of Newton’s rings, I thought it might take several days. Instead, I kept going until I had finished the lot.
Now I just have about a dozen type 100 prints, which is much simpler, since I only have to be concerned with the usual dust removal—no re-scanning!
And there was much rejoicing…

Today, I scanned. I have accumulated just over 30 Polaroids since January. Usually I scan them the same day, but I haven’t been doing that.
This is probably going to take me a while—particularly if I am to keep plugging away at the book.
Why will it take me a while? Well, it all comes down to the vagaries of scanning film, with Polaroids adding their own peculiar brand of fun to the mix. Continue reading

Today, I began raiding a past project for some layout ideas. From July 2009 through June 2010, I worked on creating one new layout for each day. For the most part, I succeeded (though there were a few days I had to play catch-up). Not all of the layouts were great, but I gave myself a new set of constraints each month to force myself to try a bunch of different stuff. Continue reading

Despite getting some decent catch-up sleep last night, I did not feel like going through a bunch of photos several times over today, so I opted instead to copy the rest of the poems to the InDesign documents I set up a little while back.
While waiting for answers to a couple of questions on the copy-editing assignment I am mostly finished with, I resumed new book stuff. Continue reading
Taking a slight break from work on the next book to work on a paying gig (yay, copy editing!) and do a little bit of overdue cleaning. Updates will resume in about a week. (The poetry and love notes posts will continue, however.)
In the meantime, the 2016 Pulitzer Prizes will be announced on Monday. Tune in to hear no mention of my name whatsoever! (The fact that I entered is enough for me.)

Wandering through iPhoto land now—approximately 12,000 images covering 2006 through 2010, with a few scans of photos from the 1970s and 1980s.
