National Poetry Writing Month, Day #13

Today’s napowrimo.net prompt is to write a poem inspired by fortune cookies. After my defeat at the hands of the Day #12 prompt, I needed this one. It’s basically a found poem, with each line taken from actual fortune-cookie fortunes that came up in an image search on Google.

…in bed

All things are difficult before they are easy
One that would have the fruit must climb the tree
There are no shortcuts to any place worth going
A part of us remains wherever we have been

You will experience small success, especially in romance
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese
Love is like sweet nectarine, good to the last drop
All the effort you are making will ultimately pay off

May you have a good appetite

Thanks! I wanted to make it a longer poem, but I was starting to run into more of the joke fortunes (e.g., “404—Fortune not found”, “I cannot help you, for I am just a cookie”, “Oops… wrong cookie”)…
