A lull in the conversation (a poem)

This started out as a simple haiku…

Fingers press buttons
to write the words and click ‘send’
—the easiest thing

But waiting is hard
For all of two minutes now
there’s been no reply

There must be something
that someone’s not telling me
What else can it be?

If I hit ‘refresh’
maybe something will happen
—the easiest thing

There’s still nothing there
I wonder if it went through
I should try again

What is this silence?
I didn’t do anything
that horrible, right?

Man, waiting is hard
For all of three minutes now
there’s been no reply

Try ‘refresh’ again
maybe it will work this time
—the easiest thing

Is her phone broken?
Maybe her phone is broken
That has to be it

I guess I’ll just ask
‘Honey? Is your phone broken?’
Oh, right—the bathroom…
