Figure/Ground (a poem)

The January 26th prompt in The Daily Poet, by Kelli Russell Agodon and Martha Silano, is to go from large to small over the course of the poem. As usual, I took a slightly different path, and referenced both Kate Bush and Nick Lowe in the process…

I was just looking at the big sky
expansive in blue, with brushstrokes in white
the half-moon faintly visible opposite the mid-day sun
I wonder how she feels about that…

The endless grey ribbons stretch in all directions
looping and crossing and running side by side
the occasional blemish, worse for the wear
mostly goes unnoticed by distracted travellers

Now I come along to witness this scene
a small piece of a world so much bigger than me
the significance not immediately obvious
I’m not sure how I feel about that…
