Secrets (a poem)

I let this one sit for a few days…

I wondered in that moment
if I had revealed too much—
but you can’t take back the words
once they’ve left your mouth;
your voice cannot be unheard,
or the trap unsprung.

The bitter truth says nothing
that bitterness does not yet know.
The sweet, sweet sound of silence
will not change the fact
of these awkward moments
or the truths they tell.

Secrets have a tendency to escape
before they have a chance to fester.

We are not always so wise…
