the same thing in practice.
Spit out from cash register terminals
to make their homes at the bottom
of shopping bags and atop landfills,
and given all the attention
of a microscopic crack
on a square of pavement.
They are seemingly unnecessary,
but indispensable as proof
of the purchase
of a pack of gum.
