The professor and the acolyte (a poem)

One of a few poems I wrote about Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Playing the Piano 2022 streaming concert.

The poet
an elder statesman of sorts

melancholy now
degrees from dour

loose grains
under foot

The old man
now and his former self

his voice
quiet, gentle

sometimes now
barely a whisper

The calendar
an unwelcome reminder

future approximate
and finite

each malignant cell
another hour

The echoless sound
of shoes on soft earth

smoke
clouds

approaching
silence
