National Poetry Writing Month 2022, Day 12

My Day 12 poem, based on the prompt at https://www.napowrimo.net/day-twelve-10/. And it’s my second draft, actually—a reaction to my first draft, which was a lot more specific, and more negative than I’d like.

It’s tempting to race to the bottom
when contemplating the Very, Very Small

The problems they cause
are so Very, Very Large
and show no signs of abating

The old saying is that
your mother said if you can’t say something nice
don’t say anything

I don’t recall my mom ever saying that
but it’s not necessarily bad advice
not at all

So I often think twice
and change my mind

Because sometimes it’s better
to let them stay Very, Very Small
