National Poetry Writing Month 2021, Day 1: Blessed is the moiré

It is National Poetry Writing Month again! My Day 1 poem is inspired by the animated video for Sun Ra Arkestra’s ‘Seductive Fantasy’, as directed by the prompt.

Here comes the Sun
ever so out of phase—
enough to shuffle the squares off to the side
where they can do less damage
while freak flags festoon the floats
gliding along the boulevard
the metaphor meets the celebration
dancing in the streets

Speak to us, o wise one!

In lines and colours and intervals
conjoined and disjointed
and free

pharaohs and planets mutating
in the colours of the dance
and sweet, sweet infinity

the voices of a thousand sirens
calling
calling
a thousand times
calling
out to me
