National Poetry Writing Month 2020, Day 1

I promised myself I wasn’t going to write a(nother) coronavirus poem. I mostly didn’t. Today’s entry is off-prompt; it was instead inspired by Stephen King’s April Fool’s Day tweet.

It’s hard to believe
that’s an old song now

It never did get any respect

The world has moved on
and then some—
but the Rick keeps rolling

Of all the things
the singer would never do
anything for love but not that
wasn’t one of them

As we drift here
in the middle of this ocean
that suddenly appeared
after the trickles we dismissed
we’re doing a lot of things
we never thought we’d do

In the middle
of a Wednesday afternoon
the Rick rolls in
disguised as a King

We’re never gonna give up…
