Winter Solstice 2016 (a poem)

Trixie woke me up this morning at the exact time of the solstice—2:44 a.m.…

The misplaced glow
of my sleep-disrupted night
throws everything off—

not the slightest bit
but enough to make me question
what I see when I open my eyes

I thought the cat was sitting there
but she’s still right here
keeping still so as not to lose the warmth of the blankets

So I get up to make a fresh cup of coffee
to help me sleep for the next three or four hours
before the confusion of the day wanders in

and I can start to ask the serious questions
about what it was I thought I was seeing
while the cat lifts her head, annoyed, then goes back to sleep
