Conqueror (a poem)

Written under the influence of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

1
Love doesn’t conquer anything at all
my persistent doubt is proof of that

That which can conquer
must, by definition, be capable of being conquered

Love doesn’t stand a chance
in such a one-sided match

not even that look you fix upon me
could turn it around

2
You’ll have to hold me down
if I am to stand up again

my doubt cannot rise
when it is smothered

surrounded, it must surrender
it must let love in

If my doubt is to die
you must kill me

3
Reined in
I will enjoy my first taste of genuine freedom

Love and doubt
cannot stand against you

Your benevolent dictatorship
will bring me to my knees

to worship at the altar
of your doubt-defying love

4
I’m not averse to trembling
for the right reason—

awe of the conqueror of love and doubt
raining down thunder

shredding the terms of surrender
would certainly qualify

You may be just the conqueror
worth falling for
