On Yumi’s birthday (A poem)

Continuing to explore the pantoum…

The day has come around again
you know, the one Shakespeare warned about
Normally, I’d be contacting my old friend
on the anniversary of her birth—though she’d probably be out

You know, the one Shakespeare warned about
(something to do with Julius Caesar)
On the anniversary of my friend’s birth—though she’d probably be out…
When I heard she was gone, I didn’t want to believe her

Something to do with Julius Caesar
and a particular date on the calendar
When I heard she was gone, I didn’t want to believe her
though I will always do my best to remember

this particular date on the calendar
Coming as it does the day before my own
it’s actually not that hard to remember—
only now I must observe it alone

Coming as it does the day before my own
it gave us a special bond—or so I always felt
Only now I must observe it alone
as the candle wax slowly melts

It gave us a special bond—or so I always felt
even as the space between then and now grew
As the candle wax slowly melts
on this day, I remember you
