Election Day storm (A poem)

For March, I will be doing pantoums. A pantoum consists of any number of four-line stanzas, with the second and fourth lines of one stanza repeating as the first and third lines of the next. (https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/text/poetic-form-pantoum)

The storm was as unexpected
as the results were anticipated
Hail poured down from blackened clouds
while the map turned slowly red

As the results were anticipated
nobody expressed much surprise
while the map turned slowly red
I could see tears form in their eyes

Nobody expressed much surprise
celebration and anger split the night
I could see tears form in their eyes
growing exhausted by the fight

Celebration and anger split the night
the usual suspects taking the usual sides
growing exhausted by the fight
wishing they could get off this ride

The usual suspects took the usual sides
as they stood before the cameras
wishing they could get off this ride
long enough to regain some steam

to face the unexpected storm
