The modern sense of audacity (A poem)

Inspired by the title of an NPR story about Maurice White (R.I.P.)…

The word audacity
doesn’t get used much anymore

In fact, the mere use of the word
has itself become an audacious act

I can’t help but think
it’s because we’re surrounded
by so much audacity
that audacity fails to stand out

It’s too easy to become blasé
when the unusual
becomes commonplace
while the merely commonplace
disappears against the backdrop
of all that audacity

It used to be that
audacity was reserved
for blatantly selfish acts

Now, the opposite earns the label—
defiant acts of positivity
expressions of love

Audacity has become
what we should
desire to achieve
