We do secret things (#3) (a poem)

While I was at the bookstore today, the phrase We do secret things caught my eye. I don’t remember where I saw it, but when I got home, I wrote four different poems using We do secret things as the title, of which this is the third.

We do secret things in plain sight
so no one will pay attention
Once they’re out in the open
they disappear

We do secret things in plain sight
so people will avert their eyes
No one wants to be caught looking
so they disappear

We do secret things in plain sight
so you can’t say you didn’t know
When you try to challenge the system
you’ll disappear

We do secret things in plain sight
We have taken control
Good and evil? Right and wrong?
They disappear

We do secret things in plain sight
so they’re what we normally do
until all those rights you think you have
they disappear
