Avoiding just saying the words (a poem)

This started out as one thing, but turned into something else…

Nobody likes to talk about that part of the story
as though part of them would die
if the words crossed their lips

Crossing, pauses, and euphemisms
take the place of simple talk—
or they just close their eyes

Nobody wants to think about what might happen
as though the worst possible thing would happen
if that were what came to mind

Because death happens only in the movies
where we can see what happens next
and redemption is a real thing
