Ingrown toenail (a poem)

I originally wrote this on March 2nd, but made a couple of slight revisions after attending a writing group last night…

I have swallowed the first pill of many
because I tried to fix the problem on my own
As usual, the usual tricks failed to work
now I must take my medicine

My belly is full; I’ve drank my fill
My back is bent, but the cushion is soft
I may open a new bottle to help ease my way into sleep
because it’s early, but the pillow is waiting

I have swallowed the pill
to make the pain go away
because I’m not as strong as I’d hoped I’d be
As usual, the usual stories fail to soothe
