an inadvertent synopsis of what happened (a poem)

The January 30th prompt in The Daily Poet, by Kelli Russell Agodon and Martha Silano, is to eavesdrop on a conversation, take notes, and write a poem based on those notes. I took a slightly different approach (because I don’t like to eavesdrop), adapting bits and pieces from my social media feeds (mostly Twitter and Tumblr).

I don’t care about the ring
or who owns the righteous hands
people loved her, too—and just look what happened

I’m a student of introspection
I swear I’m up to no good
and I love you

But there’s such a vast difference between us now
that I don’t recognize you anymore
your picture is but a collage of shapes and smudges
