The endless journey (a poem)

The December 21st prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to write a poem beginning with the line 96% of the universe is made up of the dark and unknown. I modified that ever-so-slightly…

96% of the universe
is made up
of the dark and the unknown

My mission
which I have chosen to accept
is to reveal
as much of it as possible
to reveal the real me
to the me who has been observing
bewilderedly all this time

It has been guiding me
along obscure paths
the twists and turns of which
have refused to make themselves known
preferring to let the darkness
lead me through the darkness
towards a destination concealed

As I direct light into the corners
they throw fake shadows
where the beams should have shone
Ashes and dust remain
where answers could once have been found
had they not gone to ground
when they heard me coming

Signs of life
reluctantly reveal themselves
but refuse to identify themselves
forever playing a guessing game
All I have to work with
are fear and shame
and shaky determination

So, I keep going and going and going, until…

95% of the universe
is made up
of the dark and the unknown…
