Unconfirmed rumor (a poem)

A late afternoon impression.

Eighteen of them
remembered

The last stem bent
under the weight
of its own remorse

A fragrance
A fragment
A filigree
A fiction

Tomorrow’s yesterday
spent its time thinking
about the day after tomorrow
without worrying
about what that means

Eleven times
the last thing you said
leaves a lot of letters
to mix and jumble
and turn into something
that resembles meaning

The last stem
is still standing
after the rest
have been pulled up
or died

Light the candle again
I think the matches
are over there
in that drawer
