She said she was looking
for an emergency contact—
a sensible goal, indeed—
and maybe to change the world

I’ve only been thinking about changing mine
so that kind of practical thinking
is probably a good thing
to keep in mind

Though I suspect the world at large
only has to wait us out
long enough to get back to what it was
before we discovered it

It may be best to think smaller

A sofa stacked with pillows
blankets in a pile
coffee mugs on the coffee table

A strand of hair
ever so slightly out of place

So far, the fantasy ends there
a vague tableau
and a hint of something

almost a feeling
