Promise (a poem)

Working from a prompt: to write something based on this photo.

1
Amidst the eternal dying
the hum of the needle
is a comfort

What doesn’t hurt
even a little
doesn’t make you feel alive

2
My ghosts don’t haunt me

I mock them
by etching their flesh
upon my skin

When they see me now
they run

I have no need
to give chase

We shall meet again
soon enough

3
I suffer only for love

The permanent dye
of your initials
marks my pledge

I remain
faithfully yours
