Fire season (a poem)

Yup, the country’s going to hell…

Burning inside
Burning inside

Catch me I’m
Catch me I’m
burning inside

Steam escaping through the cracks
and time escaping through the cracks
and the whole thing going cattywampus
where the last thing you’d expect
would be for everything to go right
and everything to go wrong
and the offramp to go past our destination

The last thing I saw
was the world come tumbling down
and now I’m here

Burning inside
Burning inside

Catch me I’m
Catch me I’m
burning inside

The last thing I saw was the world
come tumbling down
and now I’m here

Every vision before then
led me to this
led me nowhere
led me to this moment

Nothing is real
the fields have fallen fallow
cascading off the rising curves
to land in the same place
we took off from

Steam escaping through the cracks
and time escaping through the cracks
and the whole thing going cattywampus
where the last thing you’d expect
would be for everything to go right
and everything to go wrong
and the mercury to reach new heights

Burning in the red
Burning in the red

Catch me I’m
Catch me I’m
burning in the red

As the map turns red
to accommodate the curve

Nobody likes anything flat—
they want their curves
and they want ’em curvy

They want their waves
and they want ’em tasty

And they’re riding the wave
until the tubes go down

Burning in the red
Burning in the red
