An honest accounting (a poem)

One of those instances where a line popped into my head and I followed it from there. I waited to get some feedback before posting this one. I was a little surprised by a couple of the interpretations, though it was easy to see how they came to those conclusions.

We haven’t smidged

a

single

number

Maybe that’s why we come up empty
when looking for the right words

We haven’t had

that

conversation

anyway

One opens the door
the other doesn’t step through

My memory slips
however well I know the song

I’m not afraid of being wrong
just of losing when the fallout hits

We haven’t agreed

on

the

ground rules

No one speaks

We like to say the silence screams
but we’re just making excuses
for not understanding

We haven’t decoded

the

secret

messages

Still the spies
fail their missions

And the war goes on
