National Poetry Writing Month 2021, Day 26: Sometimes you don’t even have to try—it just happens

My Day 26 poem is my response to the NaPoWriMo.net prompt, which is to write a parody.

When it comes to song parodies
I’m no Michael Scott or Weird Al—
no “Beers in Heaven”, “My Bologna”, or “Another One Rides the Bus”

My most famous parody
comes from the early 1970s—

Sunshine on my shoulders
gives me sunburn
Sunshine in my eyes
can make me blind

Except it’s so obvious
that a gazillion other people
wrote almost exactly the same thing

In high school
a friend of mine wrote “In the Garbage”
to the tune of “In the Navy”

And a group of students
making a sign to promote a school dance
missed a letter—
resulting in CELEBATION!

Celebate good times, come on!
It’s a celebation…
