National Poetry Writing Month 2021, Day 23: Taste-less

My Day 23 poem is my response to the NaPoWriMo.net prompt, which is to write a poem that responds to another poem. I chose this piece by S. R. Mason, as it got me thinking about taste and flavors. (Maybe I should have called it ‘Flavor-less’, but I liked the punny quality of ‘Taste-less’.)

I’m trying not to obsess
about flavors
especially not
the confection of acquiescence
on the tip of my tongue
on a summer night

I seldom let appetite insist
upon anything it can’t resist
unless I know the flavors can melt together
and breathe in deep the fragrance
of the moment

Though really, the question is moot
as I haven’t been to a restaurant for a while
