National Poetry Writing Month 2021, Day 4: ‘Closed for renovations’

My Day 4 poem is my response to the NaPoWriMo.net prompt, which is to write a poem inspired by one of the photographs presented by @SpaceLiminalBot on Twitter. I responded to this photo.

A statement of intent
or perhaps a requiem

A quiet goodbye
for people who still need hope

A use for the box of old letters
found in the projection room

Something
to hold the scene together—

the state’s fourth largest lake
can’t carry it all on its own
