A long day after a long night (a poem)

A report from the other side.

I threw up in my mouth a little
as I lay my head on the pillow

The electricity was still out
so the house was cold

I had plenty of blankets
but wished I had more
so I would feel held, if not warm

I slept in until 11:30—
but I didn’t get to bed until 7

I was tired all afternoon
with the tension lingering in my forearms

I thought about doing my exercises
but decided to nap instead

When I woke up again, it was dark
I thought it was morning

It was only 9:30

I watched the previous day’s sumo tournament
but was almost asleep by the end
somehow reviving just long enough
to see Takakeisho lose his fourth match in a row

When morning came, I had my coffee
then slept again until around 11

I could have gone longer
but when sleep gets out of whack
everything else follows
