Skating sideways the length of the endless grey ribbon (a poem)

The first two words came into my head this afternoon while I was driving home in heavy rain.

Rivers risen
dresses strewn along the banks

Storm time come early
sideways rain blinds me on the road

I arrive home in time
to miss the flood and greet the disappointment

The grey lady has disappeared
into the clouds
the season hasn’t followed
but won’t show her full face
until the downpour subsides

In the morning, another ending
eyes shut more tightly, anticipating the light

Until then, a thousand ticks of darkness
not a flicker in sight

But maybe a dream tonight
