Hazy dreams and dramatic shoes (a poem)

Fell asleep watching a video last night…

Two in the morning
the noise from the looping screen
wakes me up

I look over
then fumble for the remote
and switch off the set

My dreams now
are about displacement
everything shifted one place over

I don’t think about what they are
only that misalignment—
ports that should be filled
spaces that should be empty

And then I turn on the TV
the Face the Nation anchor
is wearing high heels

That’s quite a point to be making
for a Sunday morning
roundtable discussion
