Convergence(a poem)

A coincidence, followed by an extra glass or two of vinho verde.

Without knowing it
each of us bought the same typewriter
to write our self-deprecating poems

You’ve got a head start on me
I was discouraged at 19
disinclined to say any more
until on the cusp of 24

Now I’m alone
in a place where I never thought to settle down

You’re on the road
starting out on your adventure

I’m going to reach the finish line first
another bottle emptied
the roads long shut down

The mercury’s dropping into ice tonight
not to thaw until noon

I’ll close my eyes
hold my breath
until I reach the dark side of the moon
