When artists do their work (a poem)

Written while listening to the new Nick Cave album on YouTube…

Skies bleed myriad colours
sheets of steel throw sparks
eyes summon mystery and storm

Words poke, scratch, scrape
dig and burrow their way in
complete guile, no compunction

Blood runs rivers red across skin
deep is the flush
of this beating heart’s rush

Soon come the sting of tears
silent wailing from within
until the chambers burst open

Ghosts are loud
in the service of their melancholy
when the rains of October come
