The box I left on the bed in the back (a poem)

Took a few boxes of stuff to Goodwill this afternoon. Yes, I forgot one…

I don’t blame myself
when I forget the box
I packed last night

I’ve had the weight of a hiccup
in the continuous process we occupy
to keep my shoulders hunched
and my head down
for so long
that the lapse in oversight
involving a box of mementos
or the contents of a closet or two
won’t deter me from continuing
along this road I don’t know how to exit

I will find a few more things to add
then load it up with the rest
and remind myself
that someone else will have use for them—
and that’s what she would have wanted
were she still here
