End phase (a poem)

Thinking of that line from the Paul Simon song: ‘I’ve had a long streak of that bad luck, but I pray it’s gone at last’…

I suppose the good news
is that I’m all out of parents
so this won’t happen again next year

Because when the strands tighten
with each ring of the telephone
the results are predictable

but still devastating
