I’m not going to write about this (a poem)

Once again, these are the days of long days…

I’m not going to write about
walking in during the exam
being given a barrage of details
or having to make a life-or-death decision
within ten minutes of sitting down

I’m not going to write about
the dramatic change from yesterday to today
from sharp refusal
to acquiescence to everything

I’m not going to write about
making the right decision
even though I know what it means
and what it prevents

I’m not going to write about
making phone calls to deliver bad news
to people who’ve had no contact
for months or even years

I’m not going to write about
the start of the morphine drip
the end of the fidgeting to get comfortable
the narcotized expression
the half-conscious sleep

I’m not going to write about
walking up and down the aisles of Fred Meyer
searching for a simple bottle opener
and having to buy a wing corkscrew
because that was the least-expensive option I could find

I’m not going to write about
the washing machine that spends five minutes ‘sensing’
instead of just washing the damn laundry
and then takes a gajillion years
to wash a comforter

I’m not going to write about
the raging headache I’ve had all day
or the strange sofa I have to sleep on
or what to have instead of dinner
because I need to eat
but I’m not really hungry

I’m not going to write about
having to face this all again
in the morning

  1. Woah… Impressive! I like this one a lot. There is so much to connect with & relate to; not just on a personal level since I have know some of what your emotions are right now, but also on the daily maze of frustrating & dumb shit this weird world often seems to force upon any individual. In an odd way, maybe not, it’s comforting to know… Hey, I’m not the only one who sees these things. Thanks Kevin.
