Another boring Wednesday (a poem)

Based on someone I saw walking in the rain today…

I recognised the walk of hopelessness
from two blocks away—
plodding steps
arms almost stationary at the sides

It may have been the dull, grey weather
or the slight chill in the midsummer air
but the sight of the facial expression
in the rear view mirror
said it all

And so the day goes on
and on
and on

The otherwise sweet smell of petrichor
stings my nostrils

I can’t help hoping
this will all be over soon enough
