Tributary (a poem)

A couple of small things I noticed this morning…

A border
thick and basic black
burned into the earth
where the wall will go

A man and a woman stand
before a pop-up altar
a sign sticking out of the ground:
Be Strong

Checkmate turns to stalemate

A gentle rain falls
the trees bear silent witness

The conflict has begun
