After the 43rd day (a poem)

Inspired by this week’s episode of The Handmaid’s Tale

An ungodly red
of a shade only God could make

How much should she believe?

Tears are shed in Heaven
a place on Earth
where nothing ever happens

a place it’s said
you have to go through Hell
to get to

If you have to ask
how far you’ve been
you’re not even close—
unless you believe
the fly-poster on the wall

Then again
the crimson should be easy to spot
amidst the clover
