There is no love (a poem)

Steeling myself, just in case…

There is no love
there is only fear and desire and dying
and what they may find after the fact

There is no love
there is only whatever this is
for however long we have

There is no love
there is only hanging on to what you already know
except for what you forget

There is no love
there is only whatever we call this
because we don’t know any better

There is no love
there is only here and now
and the things we’d rather not think about

There is no love
there is only whatever we make for ourselves
and a few lines in the papers

There is no love
but what we take with us
and what we leave behind
