Saturday detention (a poem)

Bonus round—based on an episode of ER

Everyone wants to play Breakfast Club
at one time or another

We are, after all
more sack lunches and cereal
than ‘O Captain! my Captain!’

Confessionals are good for the soul
provided there are no consequences—
or everyone else’s are worse

Yes, it’s good to clean the slate
but filling it back in
sort of defeats the purpose

In the place where thoughts
are left to fester
the decay leaves no stench
that anyone would notice

A scale, on the other hand
reveals something else altogether

  1. Breaks my heart to think of people who haven’t seen Dead Poet’s Society! Such a great film, up there with Breakfast Club.
