An observation (a poem)

I wrote this poem last month after watching Selma, but it is something I have been thinking for quite some time—especially when I stop to consider that many of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s that most of us view as mere history took place within my lifetime…

See those people there at the side of the road?
The ones holding signs
and waving flags
screaming with hatred in their eyes
red-faced in boiling anger
safe behind the troopers
who stand ready to fight?

Some of them are still alive

Now ask yourself
why so much has yet to change…
