Bookstore Poem #101. Fictional truths

Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park.

1
Fiction happens every day
running commentary
coming from everywhere
the streams merging
into a muddle of crosstalk
and purebred myth
made for the modern news cycle

2
Fiction
is an assertion
with ulterior motive

3
Fiction is a collection of lies
but fiction is truth
and the truth of the fiction
is that you can’t separate one
without sacrificing the other
To speak your truth
is sometimes to live a lie

4
The haphazard construction of fiction
makes it difficult to decipher
Untangling the threads is damn near impossible
you can cut them here and there
but the fiction will still hang together
You need enough witnesses
who will contradict the core fallacy
to bring it all down

5
Fiction
is a caveman
playing fetch
with his pet dinosaur

6
Unfortunately
fiction is entertaining
no matter how horrible
it always draws a crowd
some of whom
will take it upon themselves
to expand the fiction
in unpredictable directions

Before long
the threads run through
entire histories

7
Fiction
is the belief
that love conquers all
