Bookstore Poem #56. A few words about words

At the Green Lake branch of Seattle Public Library…

Words about words

Sometimes they take longer
than the words they are about

The books on the shelves
don’t prefer
one or the other

Their purpose
does not depend
on which words we choose

Their obsessions
and ours
sometimes align
in a game of Concentration
we don’t know
we are playing

The secret bond
connecting us
with the books on the shelves
connects them with each other

Yes, it is three-dimensional—
a matrix of synchronicity
an undiscovered element
connecting everything

That’s what words are worth
