the blast of direct sunlight on your cornea (a poem)

Inspired by the reflected sunlight from my car while I was at Open Books this afternoon to read a poem.

the modern automobile
is designed to give the average citizen
a blast of direct sunlight
to the cornea
regardless of where you are
in relation to the car
it is reflecting off of

sunshades and night mirrors
can’t deflect the rays
only delay them

evasive maneuvers
are your only hope

or perhaps a sugar coma
after the initial buzz has worn off

because then your eyes
will be closed anyway

at the same time
the earth’s rotation gives you a break
