The new TV season has started, and already somebody said it—so…

Anyone who brings out
that tired old trope
about how it is better
to have loved and lost
than to have never loved at all
is full of shit

Nobody comes out of that
feeling better about anything
unless it was a horrible experience
where you were going to
have to get out
or die

because the emptiness
and doubt were so consuming
that the triumphant return
of the blessed Christ
could not bring you back
to the world of the living

Not to malign Jesus
He cannot be blamed
for the failures of my love life
plus, it’s safe to say
He’s been put through enough
already

So put away
that ‘better to have loved and lost
than to have never loved at all’ shit
The worst lies
are the ones you tell yourself
and that’s the biggest one of all
