Redemption poem

Not terribly elegant, but the insight is true—I realized it this afternoon while at Third Place Books…

I have trouble sleeping at night
I lose the remote at least twice a day
(it’s always under a blanket somewhere)

There are little things throughout the day
that test my state of mind
and set me adrift beyond charted waters

So when I’m out and about
at bookstores and cafés
I’m always looking out for something

Something that will make everything make sense
so I know everything I need to know
with the flip of a mental switch

I have no idea what that something is
but I’m hoping I’ll know it
as soon as I see it

What I’m really looking for is redemption
reassurance that everything will be all right
that it doesn’t all go away

I have no idea what that might mean
I’m hoping I’ll know it
as soon as I see it
