Moratorium (a poem)

Back to work—these documents aren’t going to edit themselves…

I’m already tired of the news
Everything is playing out the same—
the arguments on this side
the arguments on that side
the anger and the symbols
and the resignation
(it’s too early to call it acceptance)
that nothing is going to change

We will always have something to lose
until all that’s left is the blame
No place we can hide
will keep us safe on this side
angels and devils
have expectations
of who is going to which dance
That’s never going to change

For today, I’m going to turn off the news
remain ignorant of the game
keep myself safe inside
keep myself safe inside
away from the anger and the symbols
and not give in to resignation
instead trusting that, with acceptance
something is bound to change
